Every strike; even every protest, is “political’ and is aimed at destabilizing the Government”. The Government must be aware when the strikes are political and used continually as a “first resort”.
The record higher profits that resulted from the world market prices in the 1970s and 1980s, are not the same today; GAWU and GUYSUCO have their responsibilities as representative and owners to communicate to the workers that today is not like yesterday; we are losing money in the industry and we are not as profitable as what you are being told by the AFC; then show them the numbers.
The AFC shouldn’t be allowed to establish bases in the sugar estates. They are giving the uneasy and miss- informed workers false hope. This can be done only by re-committing of the PPP organizers. The party need to act now. You have worked since 1947 with the sugar workers and always fought for their rights. Don’t let some overnight opportunists destroy that long brotherhood and trust.
The AFC objectives are to disrupt the growing interracial solidarity of the sugar workers; they are telling them that they have the right to “all the monies in the treasury” and leave nothing for the rest of the country. I don’t know where these people are heading. They are asking for approximately 3 million US and a minimum of 9 days’ pay.
In 1979, Moses Nagamootoo declared that “Reactionary violence should be answered with Revolutionary violence”. Is this what he is doing to the sugar workers today?
Think objectively for all of Guyana; not only for bread and butter and rice for your family but for all of Guyana.

I hope a way can be found to keep this factory open. Hope the Agricultural ministry can find a way to assist them to increase their production. We must continue to encourage small non-governmental enterprises to flourish to help with the unemployment situation.

The woman has done her job, and a very good job she has done. Let a jury of his peers decide his guilt or innocence. Let the matter be heard in court. Shame on Acting Chief Justice Ian Chang . I wonder if he would feel the same way if it was his wife or his daughter going to some one for help and getting raped.

Tues.21,Feb.2012
It is a very sad thing when somebody dies very young especially when it is a car accident. My wife's younger daughter in law sister is the
widow of the deceased. Now it will be very difficult for the mother of two very young children to deal with the situation. My wife and I wish
to express our deepest sympathies and sorrow to this young man's family and may God bless them in their time of grief.
Respectfully,
Robert J. Hillman

This is so disgraceful, that the correct words cannot be found to describe the injustice that is being committed on the Guyanese people. Mr.Green in his own words has admitted having sex with the woman. He said it was consensual, she said it was not. This is enough for charges, and the court to decide based on evidence and a jury who is telling the truth, not one man. I believe this is a obstruction of justice.

Good news. Jagdeo , when the history books are written, will be assessed as one of our most effective leaders, whose singular efforts reduced our national debt to manageable levels, and who was able to raise hundreds of millions of US dollars from the international community( India, Norway, China) for infrastructural projects, like the Berbice Bridge, the Brazil Bridge etc. The UNEP award to him as Hero of the Environment, as well as his appointment as Goodwill Ambassador for the world's rainforest, have given Guyana unprececended international prestige. Imagine a poor, unimportant country like Guyana( with a tax revenue of the gross profits of two or three medium sized American companies) being courted and lauded by the world's leading environmentalists, for showing leadership on the most important issue facing mankind : global warming. Jagdeo built upon Hoyte's and Jagan's eco-vision, that transcends party politics. Of course, like any national leader, he made mistakes in his Presidency( cussing up the media , micro-managing, promoting people on loyalty rather than talent, etc etc), but nobody can accuse him of corruption. The British Govt. which keeps a close eye on corruption issues( albeit that half of British MPs were found to have cheated on their expenses allowances), has said explicitly that Jagdeo is not corrupt. Good on you Jagdeo, be an 'elder statesman' now, and build creative and constructive bridges with APNU and AFC. Work now for all the people to be stakeholders in the society, sharing in our meagre national cake, rather than just throwing crumbs to your opponents. If you want to be Gandhi/Mandela, rather than Jagdeo, that is the only way forward: a mechanism by which we share political and economic power. You are young enough to be a visiorary.

Dr. Ramsammy and the PPP/CIVIC Government are circuitous more than necessary to the sugar workers. You have to work and produce to be able to receive benefits from your employer; having said that, I’m in no way a believer in the capitalist way of governing and furthermore, the sugar companies shouldn’t be called a corporation, but rather the ‘industry’.
During my times in the sugar industry, bonus (API) was given only when the business surpasses its target (Global Quotas) and only to employees who exceeded their contributions. (Not everyone is entitled and not everyone received the same amount). You have to work beyond your expectations to be able to receive the maximum pay out. I’m for the sugar workers, but to be self-righteous to the whole process of the industry, do not help with the ultimate goal of greater productivity; ultimately means more for the workers and a better way of life for all.
The industry is financially in an unstable position for several years, so much, that last year, the finance minister, Dr. Ashni Singh asked the government to give the sugar workers an 8% increase on their wages. Notwithstanding a losing year by the industry. The severe drop in revenue is mainly due to work stoppage and failure to deliver the product call ‘sugar’.
AFC do not have a clue of the thinking of the sugar workers; their leaders have not been in their shoes. They are only grand-STANDING ON ISSUES that they can never provide; they are exploiting on the PPP so call smugness on the sugar workers organizing.
The PPP cannot take for granted the sugar workers; they are bred to be revolutionaries and of such, they must be recognized as fighters.
We have to be able to prevent the stoppage of the industry through strike by simple malcontent issues; it’s time that GAWU be the true representative for the workers and the government not to be pro-corporation through GUYSUCO.
The struggles of the sugar workers are inherent to the PPP, and we should hold them with open arms.
The PPP/CIVIC, should start working with the sugar workers and don’t allow AFC to harness their support. This is vital for the industry, the government and the party. I suggest that Mr.Navin Chanderpaul can be the man to start working with the sugar workers.
Dr. Jagan stated clearly that all levels of workers should be treated fairly and equally. Workers were dissatisfied with the representation they were getting in the early days from the MPCA. The Union sided with the Sugar Producers Association (Managament), instead of fighting for the causes of the workers; the MPCA was replaced by GAWU to fight for true justice. Let’s be very careful here.
The martyrdom of the workers at Enmore and other estates must never be forgotten. There were over 50 workers that were murdered by their employers that started with the first riot in 1869.
