Duo arrested with illegal guns, ammo

Two young men are now in Police custody after they were found in possession of two illegal firearms and live ammunition at approximately 20:00h on Saturday at Grove, East Bank Demerara (EBD).
According to reports, Police ranks were on a motorcycle patrol in the Grove Police Station District when they observed two males acting in a suspicious manner.
They apprehended the two suspects and conducted a search during which a .38 revolver, along with six live rounds of ammunition, was found concealed on one of the suspects, who is a 23-year-old interior worker of Wismar, Linden, Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice).
Meanwhile, the other suspect, a 19-year-old student of a training institution who resides at Block Y, Grove New Housing Scheme, EBD, was also found in possession of a .38 revolver without any ammunition.
The two young men are currently being processed for court, facing charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
Two weeks ago, the Guyana Police Force in its monthly statistics reported that as of August 31, 2017, some 89 illegal firearms were seized: 55 pistols, 11 revolvers, 14 shotguns, and nine rifles.
It was reported that 40 of these illegal weapons were seized in A Division (Georgetown-East Bank Demerara); seven in B Division (Berbice); eight in both C (East Coast Demerara) and D (West Demerara and East Bank Essequibo) Divisions; four in E Division (Linden-Kwakwani), and a staggering 22 in F Division (Lethem and other Interior Locations). No weapons were seized in G Division (Essequibo Coast and Islands) during this period.
Last year, a total of 53 firearms were seized by the Police during the corresponding period.
