Hinterland youths urged to keep their environment clean

President David Granger and Minister within the Ministry of Communities Dawn Hastings-Williams were on Sunday in Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni) for the opening of the Upper Mazaruni Games 2017, where they distributed a quantity of school bags and books to primary school students of the Kamarang village. Social Cohesion Minister, of Dr George Norton and Minister within the Indigenous People’s Affairs Ministry, Valerie Garrio-Lowe also distributed exercise books to the youths of the Kamarang/Warawatta district.

Minister Hastings-Williams also took the opportunity to explain to children gathered in sports ground the importance of having a clean environment. She urged the youngsters that they too can make a difference to Guyana, by keeping their surroundings clean through the Green Generation Guyana Project.
According to the Department of Public Information, the Green Generation Guyana Project is an awareness project launched in August 2016 by Minister Hastings-Williams. It was developed with the aim of encouraging school aged children to adopt safe waste management practices.
Over 200 students from 20 primary schools across Guyana have benefited from the project since its beginning at three summer camps along the Soesdyke/Linden Highway in 2016. Some 60 students from four schools in Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara) will be targeted when the camp commences from August 14 to the 25, 2017.
“I hope that you would take what you have learned back to your homes and schools and churches to share with those who were not here,” she urged the children.
The next phase of the project begins in October and will target students in Mabaruma and Anna Regina.
