Mayor’s Cup Football tournament to kick-off Friday

The 22nd edition of the annual feature for local football teams, the Mayor’s Cup is set to kick-off Friday (May 20) evening at Victoria Ground, East Coast Demerara. The tournament was delayed several times due to the inclement weather experienced in and around Georgetown over the past few weeks.
Opening games will feature a classic East Coast Demerara versus East Bank Demerara affair when Buxton Bakewell of the East Coast take on East Bank side; Grove Hi Tech at 18:30 Hrs. The second match of the double header will see another East Coast team; Victoria Kings challenge Agricola of the East Bank at 20:30 Hrs.

The tournament is scheduled to continue on Saturday at the same venue with another double header as BV Triumph face off against Eagles at 18:30 Hrs, while Golden Grove tangle with Herstelling at 20:30 Hrs.
Coordinator of the Mayor’s Cup, Lennox Arthur expressed gratitude to the fans, teams and sponsors who have been patient as they wait for the start of the tournament which should finally see some action this week.
Top four finishers will be awarded prize monies of $700,000 for the winners, $300,000 for the first runner-up, $200,000 for third placed finisher and $100,000 for fourth placed team.
The Coordinator, who is a former National footballer and Coach and has been behind this event for all of its 22 years, indicated that this year’s cup will form part of the 50th Independence Anniversary (Jubilee) celebrations.
Arthur was extremely grateful to the sponsors who have assisted so far. The top four prizes have been put up by Aruwai Resorts, Ansa McAl, John Fernandes and German’s Restaurant respectively. Others who have contributed towards the tournament include the Government of Guyana, Macorp, Busta, Cummings’ Electrical Company Limited, Bakewell, IPA, China Trading, E Networks, Namilco and BK International.
