Canefield Cricket Club of East Canje became the winners of New Amsterdam Town Day Softball 10/10 cricket competition played on Thursday at the All Saints ground in New Amsterdam.
In what was a controversial final, Canefield romped to a five-wicket win over favorites Memorex with one ball to spare.
Batting first, Memorex rattled up 149 for 5 off their allotted overs. Washeid Edwards topscored with 38 and Vishal Phillips was left not out on 26 while Roy Jafferally made 25.
In reply Canefield were 32 for 3 when it was discovered that Memorex had 12 players on the field which resulted in a long delay.
The innings was built around West Berbice batsman Keith Fraser who batted at number three. Fraser struck eight sixes and eight fours to finish unbeaten of 84. He got support from Joshua Diaram who chipped in with 16.
The two put on 102 for the third wicket and when Diaram departed, Canefield needed 32 off four overs.
However, Memorex seized the opportunity to get back in the game and had Canefield looking for 20 off the last two overs and eleven off the last over. Canefield reached home with one ball to spare after Fraser was able to get back on strike with three balls left in the innings.
Extras accounted for 32 on the scoresheet.
Canefield received the GT&T trophy, along with $20,000 while the Man-of-the-Match went to Fraser.
Earlier Canefield squeezed pass Universal DVD in an opening thriller. Batting first, Universal DVD scored 115 for 8 off 10 overs. In reply Canefield made 116 for nine off 9.5 overs.
In the other game Memorex made easy work of Number 19 All Star. Batting first Memorex piled on 173 for 5 and in reply Number 19 All Star were bundled out for 60 in seven overs. (Andrew Carmichael)
