Boat operators of Mabaruma during the training exercise of Tuesday
In an effort to ensure that safe practices are observed when traversing on the country’s waterways, the Maritime Administration Department (MARAD) on Tuesday hosted a training session with boat operators of Mabaruma, Region One (Barima-Waini).
A team from the Maritime Administration Department travelled to Mabaruma, in Region One, to conduct training in safe boating practices with boat operators in that community.
“Some of the topics covered in the training were navigation rules of the road, emergencies from boating operations, and hazards associated with boating operations,” a release from MARAD stated.
A representative of the MARAD explained that the Maritime Department had embarked on an enhanced safety campaign in 2015 which involved the training of boat operators on safe boating practices throughout Guyana, and those operators who completed the training were certified in their respective areas of operation.
It was further related that this session saw the operators being issued with Certificates of Competency. The certificates, it was added, will pave the way for them to operate safely on Mabaruma’s waterways.
“Boat operators in Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice) have since completed training and MARAD will continue with its training for operators in the Port Kaituma, Morucca areas, and in other regions of the country. The objective is to ensure that all vessels are operating with relevant licences, and that safe practices are upheld on the country’s waterways,” the representative stated.
