Grove staved off a spirited fightback from Soesdyke to win 4-2 while Herstelling took full points when they found the winning goal late in the second half to turn back the challenge of Mocha Champs in the East Bank Football Association (EBFA) Stag Senior League.
In a closely contested match, Eric Williams’ 86th minute stunner was the separator between the two sides. Herstelling enjoyed the better run and could have easily won the match by about five goals but kept missing chance after chance.
The opening match saw Grove having to dig deep to pull off a win against the determined Soesdyke Falcons. Denzil Crawford, who hammered in a brace, had given Grove the lead in the 7th minute but the advantage was short-lived as Soesdyke responded in like manner in the 14th minute through the first of two goals from Alvin Adams.
The first half ended 1-1 as pressure continued to mount on the defending champions, Grove. The home team finally found the go ahead goal in the 62nd minute that was headed home by Lloyd Matthews.
For a moment it seemed that that second goal was enough to secure full points for Grove but with three minutes to full time, Adams fired in the equalizer for Soesdyke. With one minute to the full 90 minutes, Soesdyke buckled under pressure and scored against themselves, Delwin Boston the player.
Grove kept on applying the pressure and secured their fourth goal Crawford putting the icing on the cake in the fourth minute of added on time, 90+4.
