Lab technician slapped with gun possession charges

A laboratory technician attached to the Bartica Hospital was on Monday remanded to prison by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan when he appeared before her on illegal gun charges.
Shemroy Peters, 32, of Bartica, Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni) denied the charge which stated that on March 20 at Itaballi Police Checkpoint, Mazaruni River, he had in his possession a 9mm Smith and Wesson pistol without being the holder of a firearm licence.
Peters also pleaded not guilty to the charge which read that on the same occasion, he had in his possession seven live rounds of 9mm ammunition.
According to reports, about 11:00h on Sunday last, Police ranks conducted a search on Peters, during which the unlicensed 9mm pistol with seven rounds was found. He was arrested and an investigation was launched.
Peters, who was unrepresented, made an application for bail which was denied. He was remanded and the matter was transferred to Bartica Magistrate’s Court for April 8.
