A La Penitence, Georgetown man who threatened to kill his mother ended up before Magistrate Dylan Best on Tuesday at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts charged for using threatening language and threatening behaviour.

Kumar Viswanauth, 36, of Lot 36 Fourth Street, La Penitence, pleaded guilty with explanation to the charge which stated that on March 12, 2016, at La Penitence, he used threatening language and behaviour against his mother. He allegedly threatened to kill his mother and burn her house down.

The prosecution’s facts stated that on the day in question the defendant was under the influence of alcohol when he started to verbally abuse his mother, Chandawattie Viswanauth, the Virtual Complainant (VC). When she asked him to leave her home, he proceeded to assault her.

In Court on Tuesday, the VC told the Magistrate that she was afraid of her son since on a number of occasions he has threatened her life. She requested that the defendant be ordered to stay away from her residence if he was granted bail.

She further disclosed to the Court that the defendant was incarcerated for six months after he was charged with assaulting his step-father.

Meanwhile, the defendant told the Court: “I am very sorry for what I have done.”

He explained to Magistrate Best that he would never hurt his mother, adding that he would lose control whenever he drank alcohol.

Magistrate Best ordered the defendant to stay 300 feet away from the VC’s home. He was also restrained from verbally abusing the VC. The order is to last for the next six months.

The matter was then dismissed as the VC stated that she did not wish to pursue the matter further.
