The new Board of Directors of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) was on Monday sworn
Minister within the Public Health Ministry, Dr Karen Cummings and the new Board
in during a simple ceremony held at the Hospital’s Resource Centre.
This announcement was made by Public Health Minister, Dr George Norton. Dr Carl Max Hanoman was confirmed as the new Chairman of the Board.
The other Board members are Colonel Patrick West; Cleopatra Barkoye; Collette Adams (Deputy Permanent Secretary, Public Health Ministry); Mandy Sukhdeo; Sonya Roopnauth; Kempton Alexander along with Dr Sheik Amir and Allan Johnson as Ex-Officio Members.
Speaking at the ceremony, Dr Hanoman stated the GPHC would see a number of changes under his direction. To be given main focus will be the computerisation of the hospital.
This was strongly supported by the Minister within the Public Health Ministry, Dr Karen Cummings as well as the Board members.
Further, Dr Hanoman said that under his direction, individuals seeking care at the facility can expect advanced care and services along with more professionalism from the staff.
Addressing the Board members, Minister Cummings said that she was expecting a lot of changes at the facility and the public should “expect great things”.
The Minister also urged the Board to continue to supervise the progress of all undertakings and to ensure that while the standards were being improved, they were also maintained.
The appointment of this new Board came in light of the former Chairman, Dr Noel Blackman being charged in relation to illegal prescription of pain killers. Records show he wrote 114 prescriptions in 2014 for about 3800 oxycodone pills and nearly 2500 prescriptions for about 365,000 pills last year.
Dr Blackman, a former Health Minister under the People’s National Congress (PNC) and owner of the Channel Nine television station, HBTV, was appointed to serve as Chairman from the period of December 23, 2015 to November 30, 2016.He is a registered Vascular Surgeon in the City of New York and also an Executive Board Member at the World Health Organisation (WHO).
