Fire-fighters were up to late Thursday evening battling a bush fire at Coverden, East Bank Demerara, as it threatened several lumber yards and residences in the area. The fire, according to reports, started in Caledonia backlands at about 12:00h and rapidly spread to the neighbouring village.

An official from an export company explained that workers of the Cummings Wood Product acted swiftly in removing piles of wood that were already packed to be shipped overseas. “If the wood had caught fire, it would have been major, with millions being lost”.
After the fire was spotted, fire-fighters from Timehri, East Bank Demerara were summoned to the scene but upon seeing the magnitude of the fire, they contacted other fire services. At about 18:00h, tenders from Georgetown arrived to render support.
A woman who asked to remain anonymous explained that residents in the area had started to remove household items in case of the fire spreading further.
Up to press time, there have been no reports of any building being destroyed but businesses in the area especially National Hardware have taken preventive measures.
