A Berbice man was on Tuesday jailed when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts before Magistrate Faith McGusty on a simple larceny charge.

Romeo Frank, 20, pleaded guilty to the charge which stated that on March 2, 2016 at North Sophia, Georgetown, he stole one Samsung Galaxy cellphone valued $93,000, property of Samantha Allen.

The prosecution said that the Virtual Complainant (VC) and the defendant were cousins and Frank was staying at Allen’s home.

Around 10:30h, the VC left her phone charging and went out. Upon her return, she noticed that her phone was missing and reported the matter to the Prashad Nagar Police Outpost.

The defendant was contacted by the Police and a search was carried out on his person: the phone was found in his pants crotch.

In court on Tuesday, Frank told the Magistrate that he took the phone with the intention of selling as he needed money to go to Berbice to see his mother.

The VC explained that she did not want the defendant to go to jail, but just would like to have her phone returned.

Magistrate McGusty explained to the VC that the defendant had to face the consequences of his actions and jailed him for two months.
