Guyana Defence Force (GDF) with just 10-men held off Pele FC to win 1-0 and stemmed their two-match losing streak in the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Stag Elite League Finale on Sunday.

Playing at home, the match’s lone goal came off the foot of Alden Lawrence in the 42nd, when Lawrence playing down the left, lobbed the ball over the rushing goalie to put his side in the lead. The army held their nerve after they became a bit ragged in the final half as in the 68th Kenard Simon received his second yellow card and was sent off the field.
Though in the dying minutes of the game Travis Grant had a goal declared off-side, the GDF side simply outplayed Pele.
In the earlier match, Buxton United notched their first win in the League Finale when they defeated the Georgetown Football Club 3-2.
Buxton took an early lead when Dillon Wright scored in the 19th but GFC quickly responded as Peter Parks scored in the 21st.
In the 52nd Linden Pickett netted a penalty to put the Bourda side ahead but Wright took a free-kick which deflected off the keeper and Tryone Harper scored in the 62nd to equalize the match.
Both teams continued to battle for another goal but Wright who was having a phenomenal night hit the back of the net in the 79th.
The league continues on Wednesday at the Tucville Ground, where Alpha United will play Slingerz from 19:00hrs and then Monedderlust tackle FrutaConquerors from 21:00h.
