A man is now in critical condition after a parked Route 94 bus suddenly erupted into flames in Lethem, Region Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo).

He has been identified only as “Kills Bean” – a bus driver who normally plied the Georgetown-Lethem route.

Guyana Times understands that the minibus bearing registration number BLL 8767 was undergoing repairs at a popular service station in the vicinity of the Tabatinga Bridge, when, all of a sudden, the engine exploded. The fire then began to spread rapidly.

The bus driver, who was at the time servicing the bus, sustained severe burns about his body.

He was rushed to the regional hospital for medical treatment.

The flames also scorched a wooden building situated in the compound of the service station. Dark and heavy smoke filled the air as the vehicle’s tyres started to burn.

Nearby residents rushed to the scene to help douse the flames as they waited on the Fire Service to arrive.

Together, firemen and residents extinguished the blaze before further damage could have occurred.
