A licensed off-duty Police Officer on Thursday morning shot and killed a bandit who snatched a gold chain from his neck. The incident occurred sometime around 07:30h.
The dead bandit has been identified as Sherwin Monka, called “Yankee” of Albouystown, Georgetown. He is reportedly a known character to Police and was previously charged with several counts of robbery.
Guyana Times was told that the officer involved in the incident holds the rank of Constable and is attached to the Police Impact Base. He was in plain clothes walking along Robb Street, Georgetown in the vicinity of Scotia Bank when the incident occurred.
According to Police Public Relations Officer Ivelaw Whittaher, the officer was walking along Robb Street, when he was attacked and relieved of his gold chain. During the robbery, the Police rank whipped out his licensed firearm and discharged a round hitting the bandit to his abdomen.
The injured man was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was being treated but succumbed to his injuries about an hour later.
An investigation into the incident has since been launched by the Police Office of Professional Responsibilities (OPR).
This is the second bandit for the week to be killed during the course of a robbery. Around 02:00h on Monday, Isaiah Lennox Marques of Lot 346 Painlane B Field, Sophia, Greater Georgetown, was shot to his abdomen by an armed security guard whom he attempted to rob.
According to reports, the guard Carl Hayne and his sister were walking along Second Street, Campbellville, Georgetown, when they were held at gunpoint by the now dead man. During the confrontation, Haynes and his sister put up a fight and in retaliation, the perpetrator pulled the trigger to the firearm he was carrying but it snapped. At this point, Haynes pulled out his service revolver and discharged a round at the armed bandit.
