The eight cricket teams of the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club (RHTY&SC) continue to assist others under their “Cricketers making a difference programme.”

The teams – Farfan and Mendes Under-15, Bakewell Under-17 and Second Division, Pepsi Under-19 and Intermediate, Metro Females and Gizmos and Gadgets Under-21 and First Division- last week received a special request from the Blairmont Abundant Life Church for assistance for a book fair, while the Parents Teachers Association of the Tutorial Academy school of New Amsterdam requested assistance in the form of sport gear.

Pastor Cecil Kishun of the Blairmont Abundant Life Church received a collection of reading books, basketballs, cosmetics and toys. The books were donated under the teams’ multi-million dollars “Say yes to Reading” programme, which seeks to encourage youths involved in sport to develop a passion for research and reading.

The Tutorial Academy, based in Stanleytown, New Amsterdam, received a collection of sport gear that included basketballs, footballs, volleyballs, dominoes sets, monopoly, a cricket scorebook, a cricket trophy and indoor children games.

The school’s Parent Teachers Association (PTA) had approached Secretary/Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the club Hilbert Foster, requesting assistance after thieves broke into the school and carted off all of its sport gear.

Foster, in handing over the items to the two organisations, stated that the RHTY&SC strongly believes in assisting youths to fulfill their potentials, especially in sport and in the classroom.

He stated that the RHTY&SC, while being mainly a cricket club, was proud of the fact that it was able to touch and change lives as it strongly believes that all sportsmen should not only be outstanding on the field, but be role models and agents of positive change.

He wished the Abundant Life Church success in hosting the book fair and also committed the RHTY&SC cricket teams to assisting the Tutorial Academy in the future.

The Secretary/CEO also issued an appeal to every other sport organisation/club in Guyana to teach their members to assist others, especially their peers.

Pastor Cecil Kishun and president of the Tutorial Academy Odetta Fraser both expressed gratitude to the RHTY&SC and it’s cricket teams for responding positively to their requests for assistance and also wished all eight teams a highly successful 2014 on the cricket field.
