The Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha invites all to its annual Holi Utsav which will be held at the Everest Cricket Club Ground on Phagwah Day, March 27, from 15:00h to 19:00h. This year’s celebrations have moved from the traditional venue of the Dharmic Sanskritik Kendra in Prashad Nagar on account of renovations taking place there.
A fun-filled and exciting celebration is planned. Enjoy non-stop live entertainment by the Caribbean Hotshots band, Holi songs by Guyana’s top singers, dances by the Dharmic Nritya Sangh, Chowtaal and Tassa.
Special features have been added to this year’s programme, including Dahi Handi (groups climbing to break the pot), and countdowns and colour throws. Major sponsor of the event, Digicel, will also be giving away power and abeer. Admission is free and, as is the Sabha’s usual policy, no alcohol will be allowed.
In addition to Holi Utsav, the Sabha has organised a number of activities for the festival. Last Saturday, the Phagwah Mela and Bazaar and Folk Dance Festival was successfully hosted at the International Conference Centre.
Chowtaal Samelans are currently being held countrywide in all of the Sabha’s Praants. The East Berbice Praant’s Chowtaal Samelan and Satsangh will take place at Cumberland Radha Krishna Prem Bhakti Mandir on Saturday March 23 at 17:00h. The programme will feature chowtaal from groups in East Berbice, Bhajans, Drama and dances.
The Upper Corentyne Praanth as its Samelan on Sunday March 24 at the Number 48 Village Vishnu Mandir beginning at 13:00h. Groups from Number 36 Village to Crabwood Creek, including Blackbush Polder will be singing. There will be chowtaals, ulaara, Holi Geet, clashing of jaal and dholak and tassa drumming.
On Sunday March 24, Chowtaal Samelan will also be held at the Success Mandir, East Coast Demerara beginning at 10:00h, at the Number 11 Woodley Park Mandir, West Coast Berbice at 10:00h and at the Tain Mandir, Berbice at 10:30h. All chowtaal gols are invited to participate.
The Essequibo Praant’s Chowtaal Samelan is scheduled for Sunday March 24 at the Reliance Mandir between 10:30h and 15:00h. The Praant is also hosting a Phagwah Mela which will be held on Sunday March 31 at 12:30h at the Anna Regina Community Centre Ground.
East Bank Demerara Praant’s Samelan will be held at the Soesdyke Mandir on Monday March 25 at 18:00h. Holika Dahan – the burning of the Holika will take place on the eve of Phagwah, Tuesday March 26, at the Camptown ground, Campbellville. Devotees will assemble at the Shri Krisha Mandir at 19:00h for Havan. The Dharmic Rama Krishna Chowtaal Gole will lead the procession to the Camptown Ground.
Special Satsangh will be held on Phagwah morning, Wednesday March 27, at the Dharmic Rama Krishna Mandir at 08:00h Pandit Reepu Daman Persaud and Pandit Jagmohan Persaud will conduct the satsangh.
