Sherriff Bar owners charged for wounding

The owners (father and son) of the popular Sherriff Bar were on Wednesday before Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton for wounding the landlord’s son.
Father, Premchand Singh, 44, and son, Ravindra Singh, both of Lot 204 Lusignan, East Coast Demerara, both appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts to answer to the charge of felonious wounding.
Both men pleaded not guilty to the joint charge, which stated that on January 23 at Sherriff Street, Campbellville, Georgetown, they unlawfully and maliciously wounded the virtual complainant (VC), David Bacchus, so as to cause him grievous bodily harm.
Prosecutor Lionel Harvey objected to bail stating that the men pose a flight risk as immediately after the incident the father left Guyana for Suriname, whilst the son was about to board a flight to Trinidad but was intercepted at the airport and after the son’s arrest the father returned to Guyana.
The men were represented by Attorney Glen Hannoman who made an application for reasonable bail stating that the VC is out of danger. He stated that the police failed to conduct an independent investigation and he asked that a fair investigation be carried out, as the landlord is threatening his clients and their family with guns and breaking their properties. The attorney added that his client had made several reports but the police have done nothing and this may be because of the powers the VC’s family has in high places.  He also stated that the VC was the one who first attacked his client. Attorney Hannoman further stated that when Ravindra Singh went to the station on his own free will, he was told by the police that he is free to go because the VC said that he was not the one who wounded him, as such the man booked a flight to Trinidad where he usually travels to visit his wife.
The magistrate remanded both men to prison and transferred the matter to Court One for February 3.
